HB Teamspeak 3 Server

25 Feb 2012, 19:19

Honza and Filip hooked us up with a new huge beefed up TS3 server. :)
Should keep us tied over for GW2 and everything else on the horizon.

And now i know why I have to pay 1 gazzillion every month in server costs :)

PS: if any1 need server hosting on a over sized server tell Honza and me. If there are some commercial aspect to it you have to cough up with a little server donation money though.

Where the kitten does one turn up the volume of teamspeak? and why do they have such a horrible horrible interface?

Well, as long as you don't have proper rights you can't do a thing on the server. Yours are set now. Then there was somebody with same ISP as Lochnar 2 minutes after you logged on called Bluehawk... who's that?

My guess is Shadowhawk? :)
You meet him at the BBQ at my house.

yes it was shadowhawk.. our test didnt turn out that well...

Might be better now that i have rights, but it seemed to us that for a 2 ppl skype is better when it works... (which it dont always do)
Teamspeak seem more stable, but need to remember to make some settinges to get to 90% of skype quality soundwize

I guess for 5+ ppl you need teamspeak?

Dunno, my experience with Skype is not great and it is one of few applications I will never install in my computer. As for sound quality I can push TS much higher, but it didn't seem nescessary, Speex 32kHz seemed quite good. I can switch to higher quality codec if you need.

We have been using Skype the last few years in Ancient exclusively. And imo, it is better than TS up until the point where push to talk is a must. With lager groups of people without push to talk the background noise from candy wrappers and children crying gets overwhelming sometimes. But still we have been raiding using Skype, so it is doable.

The sound quality in TS is debatable. I have had good and bad experiences.

Well, the thing is TS is optimized for low latency while sustaining comprehensible quality. With TS (on our server) your latency (time to start hearing what the other one said) is about 20-40ms. It's same with Ventrillo or other communication software of his kind... Otoh, Messenger voice or Skype has "higher quality" sound, but it is paid with much higher latency (high enough to present potential disadvantage in competitive environment of PvP)... it doesn't have to be the issue always, depending on architecture of the game you are playing. MMO (well, those well made) engines runs in time split that we can call predictor and corrector... While predictor part of the engine runs ahead of time, corrector part runs behind. Somewhere in between is a player shooting fireballs.
Those who played DAoC might remember part of predictor algorithm on client side as "lag ghost".
Server side predictor usualy runs up to 5 secs ahead of game time you percept and can change (the best predictors even change the length and time-step of prediction based on situation, server load, median ping to users etc.).
Now, let's say predictor runs 2sec ahead of "real 'game time'". Server predicts that enemy group is coming to you in visual. First of your group shouts 'incoming' (human brain will take about .2 -.3 sec to recognise threat and start shouting). Now you get latency before the "incoming" gets transfered to your fellow group mates (let's say 40ms for TS/Vent, about 350-450ms for Skype/Messenger, about 1sec for phone conference). You have some communication from main assist "primary target whorelock", again, latency time etc. etc.. With every message said you are gaining about 300ms disadvantage against your fast TS/Vent enemy... within that time you are giving enemy enough time to do at least one action to recover/retaliate because you are simply too slow...
There are many further factors to this, but basically using high latency communication you are getting your group behind corrector time which is BAD resulting in your group firing on dead targets etc. Also, note that game server processes clients signals in "heartbeats"... collects signals and processes them once every second. With response times using TS/Vent you got time to respond in one beat (see enemy, 0.3 sec to process it, 0.1 sec "Incoming", 0.04 sec for broadcast latency, 0.3 sec to process the message, 0.1 sec to press "fire" button + time for message getting send to server... ~0.84 sec) with Skype/Messenger (see enemy, 0.3sec to process, 0.1 sec "Incoming", 0.35s to broadcast, 0.3 sec process message, 0.1sec to press "fire" button and send it to server... ~ 1.15sec)... no way managing to compete while you are 36% slower than your enemy. And I am still barely scratching surface of the latency issue here.
Long story short if you had two absolutely identical groups, one with TS, other with Skype fighting each other, the TS one will most likely wipe the Skype one without problems.
This problem will never appear in PvE since mobs are ultimately DUMB and there is no competition with fast response times.

team speak 3 is fine, you just right click on people and adjust them if they are too low or too high.

and push-to-talk... really needed feature in skype... seriously
